Reputation Enabled Defense – What it is and why you need it.

OK so you may not know what “Reputation Enabled Defense” (RED) is, why it’s important and what the benefits of having it are to your business. So let us help.

Essentially Reputation Enabled Defense provides an ‘extra layer of defense’ for your IT security services. But don’t get thinking you can file it under ’nice-to-have’. Quite the opposite, as you’ll soon see.

So why do we need an extra layer of defense? Why not just carry on as we are? You might well decide to do that, but consider this: traditional gateway anti-virus systems update signatures on a daily or hourly basis and that’s OK. But RED does this on a real-time basis. This means your business plugs otherwise gaping holes in your network’s security, making it safer while all the time delivering faster, more productive browsing.

With Malware becoming ever more prevalent you might want to seriously consider whether you continue to take the risk. RED all but eliminates the risk.

Sounds like a no-brainer, right? These are just some of the benefits of Reputation Enabled Defense if you’re still unconvinced:

Protect valuable data

Remember how we explained traditional anti virus systems update signatures on an hourly or even daily basis? RED does this in real-time. It means it’ll spot more disruptive kinds of viruses far more effectively. That’s definitely good news.

Admin can put their feet up

Given that traditional systems update signatures periodically throughout the day, that used to present administrators with a headache. There were opportunities for nasties to get through. That threat is dramatically reduced when you have RED in place.

Things work better

Now that RED enables better scanning of results, administrators can achieve the right balance between performance and security. Having a network that’s safe as houses is great but if it means users can’t actually go about their day-to-day work that presents a problem. RED improves experience without negatively effecting user experience.

High performance

Grumpy users are the bane of administrators’ lives and can even lead to lost contracts. Let’s face it, all workers expect their browsing experience to be A1. Frankly they they don’t care how secure the system is, they just want to be able to go where they want to go on the web. Security is none of the concern. RED positively impacts that process, enabling easier browsing. In short this means administrators generally get an easier life.

Bandwidth

Another bug bear for every administrator. Good old bandwidth comes up again. So imagine being able to control the bad sites that slow everybody down and eat up bandwidth. RED enables this.

Intuitive learning

This is the clever bit. Sites visited the most are regularly updated in the reputation authority database because the technology is learning on the job. Now that’s powerful stuff.
